Welcome to Hogwarts Distance Education, I hope you enjoy seeing our fun as much as I have had in the planning of it. Setting up my schoolroom has always been a big fun deal to me. I do rea;lize that the children are getting older, themes are kind of wasting away for them but I wanted just one more. Just one more big thing before they are just too old to really have fun with it anymore.

The idea started with a few posters and a yahoo group. Then of course we had to have a Honeydukes and before you knew it the kids had thrown around ideas, I saw Harry Potter parties online and this little idea has taken on a life of its own. Because like me my children have to go all out so to speak!

Magical Learning!!!

We have made it to week 3!! I do believe her cat looks shocked that this happened! Skyler has 6 yes 6 cats but this one right here is her absolute favorite. Her name is Stella Luna after the baby bat from a book and Stella is usally wherever Skyler is.

She is enjoying her creative writing for Enchanments. My hope is that she can get to a point she will no longer need writing prompts. She is such a creative child it is hard to beleive writing is not a thing for her.

Magical Lesson Plans!

My little witch is 15!!! It is hard to believe we started doing Magic School back when she was so little and have been off and on with it all these years! This is most likely our last year though focusing on it so much because she is getting older and it is getting harder to magic-fy things with her! It has taken a big chunk of my summer deciding things and researching and putting it all together, sadly my magic wand was out of order for all that.....

So this will be the start of our year, as she finishes certain things others will be added. As things are found or thought up we add little things here and there all year. She will be reading many many books of course! I also wanted it to be more hands on and less writing because she seems to learn better that way. Don't get me wrong writing is important of course I just didn't want to concentrate on her writing down every little thing like we have in the past. These are a few of the books we will start off with this year. Calling All Witches is about all of the wonderful ladies in the Hogwarts world. Now the reason I chose this was because I really want Skyler to learn about amazing things women have done in our world. I want her to grow up with the healthy thought that girls can do anything! I think it is important to know that witches are just as important as wizards! The Bake Like  pro graphic novel is for Cauldron Cooking. It is a wizard who teaches the kids how to bake, but also the science behind it. Why certain things react they way they do in the kitchen. We will also of course do other things for Cauldron Cooking but this looked fun so I added it in. Wild Things is for Magical Nature. This is packed with tons of little nature projects with a magical theme and I love getting Skyler outside in the fresh air doing things.

Waldock's Wizards and Wands is a new thing this year! While I changed some stuff up from the written idea of this curriculum it is still amazing! Her resource list is so out of this world it may as well be magic! You can just tell the work that went into this.  It has just about everything you can think of included in it. The wonderful witch who wrote this put hours into it and you can see that! Many of the things she has planned we have already done but it was still an amazing resource to have and use. It is a year long study on just about every subject Hogwarts offers their students as well as reading the Harry Potter series.

Magic Fun!!

Once again I find us playing with fire! She absolutely loves fire portions. This week was a protection spell. It gave us a tough time too! We had to switch out the "cursed paper" twice to find one that would work. She still had a ton of fun though.

When telling her not to use this near any of her cyclops friends she informed me that a cyclops was a cannibal and they didn't make good friends LOL!

Love Potions, Arithmancy and Magical Creatures!!

Skyler had a ton of fun this week in potions! She got to make a love potion! This is another one from The Wizards Workshop book.

I still think the cute little jokes and notes on the pages are simply adorable! Skyler had fun "casting" her spell too!

Our Magical Week

Magic school day is here!! This is her favorite day of the week I believe.  It was a pretty full day with Cauldron Cooking, Potions, book work, reading and a magical movie! This is the first time using The Wizards Workshop book and I am hoping she can do whatever she chooses pretty much on her own.  The art work in the book is pretty cutesy too. It is divided into three chapters, basic potions for beginners,  advanced wizard potions and hair raising potions for daring wizards. Now this is a cute book I saw it and fell in love right away. It wasn't the kids just mixing random stuff it was actual experiments with reactions but worded in a magical way so it was win win for me! It also came with a handy ingredient list and a set of down loadable labels to make the bottles for everything, which I did of course! Now the first down fall was the whole common ingredients it says that it uses. NO, most of these are not common things people have around their house I had to order a big majority of these chemicals off line.
The second down fall was picking potions and realizing we didn't have some of the stuff readily available at home even though I already got everything on the list. That was kind of frustrating. Granted I could have read through the book beforehand but when a book advertises that the list is everything you need I pretty much expect that to follow through. We finally decided on a potion that we had everything needed for and got to work!

Week 4 Magic Fun

So we had another project week! These seem to be her favorite weeks of course. We just had to split all the books she is wanting to read and all the activities she is wanting to do because too much in one day was too overwhelming! Alternating the weeks seem to be much, much better! So we started off with potions this week and it was all about mystical sand!

Week 2 Magic Fun!

I was called "best mom ever" and "coolest mom in the world" several times after today! Apparently, not many moms teach their child fire based potions in the house or make butter beer fudge! This was project week and we had a blast to be truthful I loved every minute of it! The potion we did today was burning basilisk skin and it was awesome! I knew it would be wonderful so after she finished all her mixing I decided to video the outcome.

Week 10 Of Magic Fun!

It was project week so FUN FUN!!!! Skyler finished the book What Were the Salem Witch Trials? She had never really heard about any of that type of stuff before so she was a bit amazed. She was shocked people actually thought that way and even put others to death. So, it was a history eye opener for sure!

Magic Fun Week 6

This week she finished up watching Animal Planets documentaries about mermaids for Magical Creatures. I found this cool little mermaid soap making kit at Five Below for her to make as a project this week! So she watched the movie, made soap and made a page about the movie for her journal she is putting together!

"Hooray"!!!! She also found her class shirt!

Our First Week Back!

Well we had our Magic School Day for the week and it was a win all the way around! We read, we learned, we played and had a blast! This week she decided to concentrate on frogs for Magical Creatures. That may have something to do with our field trip a few weeks ago. I got some notebooking pages off line to make her a journal of sorts so she could keep track of all the things she does instead of boring work sheets! I also added some dyslexic games from The Thinking Tree since she loves them so much! When we are all done I will have it all bound together for a keep sake. For her cover she chose to color a picture of the Gryffindor crest!

Of course the cats had to get in on the action! I suppose they could be magical creatures too.
